Ingredients

6 slices of cinnamon roll bread (or regular cinnamon rolls, sliced and slightly stale)

2 large eggs

1 cup milk or cream (whole milk, half-and-half, or a non-dairy alternative like almond milk)

2 tablespoons granulated sugar (or brown sugar for a deeper flavor)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

A pinch of salt

2 tablespoons butter (for greasing the pan or griddle)

Optional Toppings:

  • Maple syrup
  • Cream cheese glaze cream cheese, powdered sugar, and milk mixed
  • Fresh berries strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries
  • Whipped cream
  • Powdered sugar
  • Chopped nuts e.g., pecans or walnuts

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Cinnamon Mixture

  • Combine the Dry Spices:
    - In a small bowl, mix 1 to 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon with 1 or 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar or brown sugar.
    - Stir the dry mixture until the cinnamon blends evenly with the sugar. This combination will serve as the core flavor base for your toast.
  • Optional Flavor Boost:
    - If you like a stronger cinnamon taste, add a little nutmeg or allspice. This is optional but can add variety.
    - Keep track of how much spice you use. A little goes a long way.

Step 2: Create the Egg Custard

  • Crack the Eggs:
    - Depending on how many slices you plan to make, start with 2 to 4 large eggs. Crack them into a wide, shallow bowl. A pie plate or baking dish also works because you will need to dip bread in it.
  • Add Milk or Cream:
    - Measure out about 1 cup of milk (whole, skim, or dairy-free) or half-and-half. Pour it into the bowl with the eggs.
    - Whisk until the mixture is smooth. You want the milk to combine fully with the eggs.
  • Stir in Spices:
    - Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract. Next, sprinkle in your prepared cinnamon-and-sugar mix.
    - Add a small pinch of salt if desired. Then whisk again. Make sure there are no visible lumps of spice.
  • Check Consistency:
    - The custard should have a silky feel. If it looks too thick, add a bit more milk. If it feels too thin, whisk in an extra egg.
    - Take a quick taste test. If it seems too light on cinnamon or sugar, add a small pinch more.

Step 3: Soak the Bread

  • Pick the Right Slices:
    - Cut your chosen bread into slices that are about 1-inch thick. Thicker slices absorb more custard.
    - If your bread is too thin, it may break apart. Adjust thickness to your preference.
  • Dip Each Slice:
    - Place a slice of bread into the egg custard. Press it lightly so it soaks up the mixture.
    - Flip the slice to coat the other side. Make sure both sides absorb the liquid.
  • Set Aside to Rest:
    - Once soaked, lift the bread and hold it over the dish to let extra custard drip off. Then place it on a plate. Repeat with all slices.
    - Let the soaked bread rest for about 1 minute. This helps the liquid settle and prevents sogginess.

Step 4: Cook on the Stove

  • Warm the Pan:
    - Place a non-stick skillet or griddle on medium heat. Add a small pat of butter, about 1 teaspoon per 2 slices.
    - Let the butter melt fully before adding the bread.
  • Arrange the Bread in the Pan:
    - Carefully place each slice of soaked bread on the hot surface. Leave some space between slices to avoid crowding.
    - Cook for about 2 to 4 minutes per side, checking often to prevent burning.
  • Check for Doneness:
    - The bread should have a golden hue on each side. A firm exterior with a soft interior is the goal.
    - Adjust the heat if you notice the toast browning too fast. If it cooks too slowly, it may become soggy.
  • Repeat as Needed:
    - If you have many slices, you can keep cooked ones warm on a baking sheet in a low oven (around 200°F or 93°C).
    - Add fresh butter or a light layer of cooking spray before cooking the next batch.

Step 5: Optional Glaze or Toppings

  • Simple Sugar Glaze:
    - Mix 1/2 cup of powdered sugar with 1 tablespoon of milk and a few drops of vanilla extract. Stir until smooth.
    - Drizzle over the cooked French toast slices for an added cinnamon roll effect.
  • Cream Cheese Topping:
    - Soften 2 ounces of cream cheese. Whisk with 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon of milk.
    - Spread this mixture on each slice, or serve on the side.
  • Additional Garnishes:
    - Top each slice with fresh fruit like strawberries, blueberries, or sliced bananas.
    - Sprinkle chopped nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, for extra crunch.
    - Serve with a drizzle of maple syrup or honey if you prefer a classic sweetness.

Step 6: Present Your Dish

  • Plate the Toast:
    - Stack slices neatly on a plate. Leave some space on the side for fruit or other garnishes.
    - Use a small sieve to dust powdered sugar on top if desired.
  • Add a Final Touch:
    - A bit of extra cinnamon sprinkled on top can highlight the aroma.
    - You can also place a small bowl of glaze on the table so people can add more to their liking.
